Growing Good People Series: Guiding the Next Generation at Tumu Timbers.
In March 1982, a Tumu Timbers job advert caught the attention of Russell Ede. After applying for a position as a loader driver, he met with John O’Sullivan and was offered the job. This marked what was to become almost 40 years of service, leadership and commitment to Tumu Timbers.
Since that first role, Russell’s career has evolved through a range of positions. His career progressed to a treatment plant operator, before moving into leadership positions such as Manufacturing Supervisor, Production Supervisor, Production Manager, General Manager and Assembly Manager. Today, as Operations Trainer, Russell is responsible for setting new staff up for success, delivering baseline SOP training and mentoring staff who hold positions responsible for looking after the business.
Russell has seen the business develop over the years and notes that the most significant change over time has been the company’s growth, often described by the saying, “from a small acorn grows a large tree.” Looking back today, Russell takes pride in knowing that the capital investment projects he was involved in helped drive many of the improvements seen across the operation.
One of the biggest milestones for Russell was the company’s 50th celebration and knowing that he played a part in the journey to get here. To recognise Russell’s contribution, Tumu Timbers named the assembly factory in his name, which he described as very humbling.
For Russell, his years of service at Tumu Timbers have importantly given him job security. Followed closely by a range of job opportunities and long-lasting friendships. “I feel honoured to have been given the opportunities I have had over this time”. Russell also acknowledges Hugh O’Sullivan for planting the acorn seed in his life, and John for the trust and opportunities he has been given over the years.
Looking ahead, Russell remains focused on his current position, where he guides and supports staff. When asked to provide advice for new employees, Russell expressed that “come to work every day and don’t leave your brain at the gate. Carry out the task you are instructed to do, and opportunities will arise.”
